Your Local: Cross Scythes
The Reader:
Ian Cracknell, DJ and home brewer.
Why is this ‘Your Local’? “It’s
a really great building that’s been reinvigorated with the best points of a pub
in mind – architecturally and from a beer perspective (via Thornbridge Brewery).
It’s a pub for the people.”
Favourite tipple: Black IPAs like Thornbridge’s Raven 6.6%. Five
malts and six hops used - driving this powerful and unique style with its
roasted depth and well hopped nature.
The Local: Positioned
at the curved intersection as Scarsdale Road snakes round into Derbyshire Lane,
the imposing Cross Scythes pub is a welcoming destination after an incline of
mighty proportions. This thirties era public house has had many of its original
features revitalised via a substantial investment from Punch Taverns in the
lead up to Thornbridge Brewery's managed lease takeover. As you walk inside,
the detached building opens into a huge main room with high ceilings; a smaller
snug and parlour lead off with outdoor seating and parking towards the back.
One central bar circles through all rooms providing refreshment in each chamber.
Seven hand pulls
of Thornbridge beers plus two guests from the likes of Elland, Oakham,
Darkstar, Bath Ales and Kelham Island constantly rotate. Keg sees Thornbridge favourites such as their
American golden pale ale – Chiron and imperial IPA Halcyon available for
suppin’. Look out for 'First Pour Fridays' where Thornbridge launch new brews
to their bars and which saw Sheffield’s own spirits merchants - O’Hara’s launch
collaborative brew Kacho, a rum porter, via the Cross Scythes.

Steve & Becky
Keir have newly landed as managers at the pub, having a decade of bar
experience between the young couple. Relocating to Sheffield from Derbyshire
they’re relishing meeting the local community and look forward to heading up to
Thornbridge Hall in 2014 to brew their own collective beer.
Food is a strong
focus at Thornbridge pubs and the Cross Scythes is no different, offering
monthly rotating pork pie options such as Bramley apple and cider. If you're
after an evening meal the handmade hearty hot pie selections infuses
Thornbridge beer into the recipes. Try the steak and Lord Marples; this classic
British bitter tenderises the meat for a twist on the steak and ale pie classic
(£5.50 for pie, chips and mushy peas).
Fancy joining a billiards team in the New Year?
The Cross Scythes is one of a handful of pubs to house a table in the area and
they’re setting up a new league with the Gardeners Rest and the New Barrack
Tavern. If not, what about home brewing? Join the monthly Sheffield homebrew
club – every second Tuesday (@SheffBrewClub) for tasting and discussion
sessions in the games snug.
