Your Local: Anchorage
Inspired
by East Coast American dining this new venue from The Harley crew opened its
‘craft’ beer doors in August 2014. Taking the place of Fitzwilliam and West in
their West One location; a sad day to see a Sheffield indie go, but a fitting
replacement. Anchorage have managed to strip back the modern interior and
re-fit in a creative way to develop a tranquil feel to the open space. With industrial
pendant lighting, natural wood fixtures and dedicated art exhibition space (3rdRail’s ‘Artist Beer Visions’ currently adorns the walls showcasing fictional
beer label artwork from the likes of Tom J Newell and Mr Gauky).

Positioned across a trio of levels - the
lower floors are more laidback focusing on the deli menu with in house cured
meats, cheese platters and sandwiches such as salt beef piled onto rye bread with
sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and mustard (the Reuben). The top floor is a dedicated
restaurant dining space seating sixty-five. Diners can even choose their own individual
lobster from the tank to be cooked on the grill. Becoming known for their focus
on meat - the hanger steak, a cut usually kept for the butcher’s table has
become a best seller. The new menu has just launched so look out for Amish
chicken – rubbed in garlic, paprika and seasoning before being baked in milk
and Gnudi – light balls of ricotta and parmesan rolled in semolina flour.
The
draught beer offering rotates frequently, focusing on US and UK keg, think
Victory, Weird Beard, Wild Beer Co and Black Jack breweries. There’s a
dedicated stout line with recent beers including Siren and Mikkeller’s
captivating collaboration Beer Geek Daydream. In addition to the keg lines are
two hand pulled ales generally showcasing local beers (Skye’s Edge, Abbeydale,
Kelham Island). If you happen to be in town after work, take advantage of their cheeky drink offer on the
ales at £2.50 a pint (4-8pm Monday to Friday).
