Your Local: Shakespeares

Why
is this ‘Your Local’? “Best range of British beers in
Sheffield covering every style as well as interesting foreign beers. They have
an outstanding range of whiskeys too, all at good Yorkshire prices.”
Favourite
tipple: Whatever is the
hoppiest beer! All Hallows Eve, a pale and hoppy from Steel City Brewing (our new
brew out in November).
The Local: Shakespeares was refurbished in July 2011 back to its former Georgian coaching inn
glory, after some 18 months closed. The pub’s recent crowning as Sheffield
CAMRA’s pub of the year has cemented its reputation for abundant good beer offerings.
Positioned on Gibraltar Street, gateway to the notorious Kelham Island beer
trail, the 18 taps split across cask and keg keep passing visitors and regulars
exceedingly pleased. Add in a 1am licence on Fridays and Saturdays, a 1950s 7”
vinyl jukebox (it’s free to use!) and a private beer garden - they may have the
perfect combination for Sheffield’s beer-vana sweet spot.
AbbeydaleBrewery’s Deception 4.1% is the regular ale out of the 9 hand pulled beers on
offer. American guest beers feature heavily on the 9 keg taps such as Brooklyn
Brewery’s Scorcher #366 4.5%, alongside continental beers Lowenbrau 5%, Franziskaner
Hefeweissen 5% and traditional Belgian lambic fruit beer Bellue Vue 4.3%. With
the bottle assortment hitting the 50 plus mark look out for rarities such as
Norwegian Nogne Brewery’s Aurora Australis (Quadrupel style at 14.9%), Japan’s
Hitachino Nest range or Mongozo coconut beer 3.6%. In the last 2 years 1600
different casks have made their way through the ‘ShakesBeers’ hit list (catch
all new beers to the bar via www.facebook.com/ShakespearesShfwww.facebook.com/ShakespearesShf). In November their
annual beer fest has an additional 30 plus casks and 10 plus ciders on stillage
in the upstairs events room. Catch live bands every weekend and The King Bee
rhythm’n’blues vinyl devotees club night monthly Saturdays.
