The Local: The
Bell Jar opened in June 2013 on London Road as a bar, performance venue and art
gallery space all melded into one. Live
music is a huge part of the bar’s ethos providing a platform for local singer
songwriters with regular jam sessions to obscure and eclectic DJ nights. Covering
a truly diverse style of music from hip hop to soul to punk to film music and
electronica. The decks are situated on a church alter and a drum kit continuously
resides in the far corner of the bar space. Bands perform on the same level as
the audience providing an intimate experience for gig goers. Sheffield grunge-rock
upstarts Avida Dollars frequently play here; you’ll even find band member Apple
Armstrong behind the bar most nights of the week overseeing the managing of
this intimate live music venue.
The
bar itself is situated in parallel along one wall with 8 keg (beer and cider)
and 5 hand pulled ales. Local ales from the cherished Kelham Island Brewery’s
such as their Pale Rider and The Sheffield Brew Company are the mainstay beer
offerings. Alongside you’ll find handpicked ales from guest regional breweries
such as Lancashire based Cross Bay, which rotate and range in price from £2.70
to £3.20 a pint. Brooklyn lager is available on draught keg here and at a
respectable £4.20 per pint. To the rear
is an enclosed courtyard featuring local graffiti artists’ work and providing a
suntrap for outdoor relaxing during the day – a hidden gem in this area of
London Road.
