The Local: Rutland Arms on Brown Street in the city
centre is one of a trio owned by the team behind The Closed Shop in Crookes and
newly acquired Three Tuns, off Campo Lane. Recently seen on BBC’s Look North
during ‘Hendo Gate’ where local journalists reported from the Rutty’s comfy
classic pub booths as the relish story unfolded. If you called in over Christmas
you might have been lucky enough to witness Magic Rock’s head brewer Stuart
Ross inaugurating the pub’s fairy lights in his leotard. Magic Rock is a mainstay on the bar’s draught keykeg
offering, so if you are on the lookout for their Cannonball IPA (7.4%) or High
Wire (west coast pale ale 5.5%), then the Rutland’s the destination for you.
The pub is a Blue Bee Brewery tap so look out for one off chilli
versions of their delectable Lustin’ for Stout (4.8%). Eight hand pulled ales
rotate across local and regional microbreweries such as Arbor, Hopcraft,
Revolutions and Bristol Beer Factory (with two Blue Bee regulars including Bees
Knees Bitter 4%). Big on supporting the new wave of UK and European keg beer;
drop by to sample rotating offerings from Brewdog, Hardknott, Summer Wine or
Mikkeller Brewery beers.
A relaxed welcoming atmosphere and a loud jukebox
(stick to the obscure selections or you may be ejected) equals many an hour
whiled away at this corner stop. Student friendly pricing on the butties,
Sunday roasts and brownies add to its charm. Head chef Rico has a penchant for tweeting his
foodie creations; give him a follow @RutlandArmsChef for a photo journal of
taste bud watering inducement.
