There’s something about a celebration that brings everyone together, no need for paper hats, party poppers or any other revelry item when you’ve got a beer; that’s all you need. It seems to be the month of celebrations, from The Tapped Brew Co having a big knees up to mark their centennial brew to Exposed magazine’s 10th birthday, rejoicing in style with a collaborative brew alongside Thornbridge Brewery .  Sheff tap-o-rama The Tapped Brew Co was a double whammy affair – their 100th brew and first birthday rolled into one. They’ve brewed over twenty different beer styles since launching at the Sheffield Tap from wheat beer to pale ales and stouts; their 100 th  brew was an American pale ale with lots of Centennial hops. Mashing began at 5pm and a tentative crowd watched the brewer’s every move. The owners have a truly eclectic live music policy.” shrine to music The Local:  The Bell Jar opened in June 2013 on London Road as a bar, performance venue and art gallery space all melded into one.  Live music is a huge part of the bar’s ethos providing a platform for local singer songwriters with regular jam sessions to obscure and eclectic DJ nights. Covering a truly diverse style of music from hip hop to soul to punk to film music and electronica. The decks are situated on a church alter and a drum kit continuously resides in the far corner of the bar space. Bands perform on the same level as the audience providing an intimate experience for gig goers. At the beginning of a new year you often find yourself reflecting back over the year that was. Remembering the gigs you attended ( Black Sabbath at Sheff arena will long stay in my good time memories) and in my case, the beer I imbibed too. Luckily there’s an app or two for that, just as long as you can manage to swipe and stab at your phone under any state of affairs, it’ll help you remember what you relished drinking along the way. One of my personal beery highlights from last year was sharing a toast of Brooklyn Brewery’s Sorachi Ace, a delicate Belgium style farmhouse saison, with the man who created the recipe - head brewer Garrett Oliver at the Society of Independent Brewers ( SIBA ) gathering last March. It was announced not long after that Sheffield would again host the event and its associated beer festival, Beer X . The last eight months have been a perfect storm for this small newly formed Yorkshire brewery (Bradford way). Developing from home-brewing routes, commercially brewing in June 2013 and launching at the ace Sparrow bier cafe in July to a host of applause from peers. The monks have grown along with their newly formed brewery recently adding Bitches Brewing and The Grove (Huddersfield) employee Brian Dickson to their crew. True to their words, "Progressive, bold, British Craft Beer. From the North, with Love" I'd keep watching them in 2014 as it could well be a big year for these guys.   With three beers out in speciality beer shops - New World IPA, Strannik Imperial stout and an Allgates Brewery collab barley wine, there are brewmores of another collaboration with Bad Seed Brewery on the horizon. Gearing up to make a mix tape of the  best beery things  of the last year  takes me some time to prepare  for. I quite enjoy the therapeutic nature of reflecting back on where I’ve been and what I’ve drunk (and  often the  people  I've  met and time  I've  spent with friends along the way).  I put on an album  – something instrumental from  Marc Moulin  (a good one to get  you  thinking), sit down and let the  memories drift back. Next stage is to trawl through my back catalogue of photos; I seem to have a bit of an itchy trigger finger when it comes to capturing beer visually. Somehow I think it’s more to do with  my inherent drive to catalogue and collect ‘stuff’ call me a beer magpie if you like. Well here you go……..
