Your Local: The Sheffield Tap

The Reader: Steve Moore, Community Recovery Worker. A Sheffield resident for thirty years Steve has become one of the leading authorities on British cinema posters and is currently organising an exhibition with Twickenham film studios to celebrate their 100th year (films such as Zulu, Alfie and The Beatles’ Hard Day’s Night all shot scenes at this historic studio).

Why is this ‘Your Local’? “The architecture of the building combined with the traditional bar atmosphere makes this a charming railway tavern to drink in; combined with a good choice of proper ale.”

Favourite tipple: Thornbridge Brewery ‘Brother Rabbit’ 4% abv, a crisp golden ale.

The Local: The converted former Edwardian refreshment and dining rooms at Sheffield railway station now proudly shares its Grade 2 listed interior with Sheffield residents and all those with ‘extra time’ between connecting trains; which is handy if you’re on platform 1b as there is direct access to the bar. During the 1960s the room had become disused and was eventually closed in 1978, leaving the building to decay.

Business partners Jamie Hawksworth and Jon Holdsworth lead a team to restore the rooms back to their former glory and in 2011 this was recognised by Camra and the National Heritage winning that year’s ‘Best Conversion to Pub’ award.

With 11 cask handpulls (offering Thornbridge Brewery mainstays and constantly rotating additions), 12 continental swing handled taps (including fantastic Czech beer Bernard) and over 200 bottled world beers bulging out of the fridges the choice is exceptional. Just keep an eye on your watch though as you wouldn’t want to miss that connection! You can imagine the repeated phase heard echoing round the bar, ‘I’ll get the next train’. The team offer regular beer festivals (Thornbridge ‘Hopfest’ back in October showcased exclusive dry hopped beers) and ‘Meet the Brewer’ events which brought the likes of Darkstar and Acorn breweries to the tap.

Liking a challenge the team are now converting the store room into an onsite brewery (and viewing gallery) with beer anticipated for mid-February availability. This will house the sister brewing company ‘Tapped Brew Co.’ and will be the only working brewery in a railway station in the country. Expect some outstanding house beer, with the likes of ‘Bullet’ IPA, ‘Libertine’ porter and summer session ale ‘Bramling’ all in the plans; adding yet another unique enticement to the venue’s lure.
