The Sheffield Brewery Co. Steel Inspired

Image
Harry Brearley by Faunagraphic A display cabinet stands proudly on the top floor of Sheffield Town Hall housing items under a ‘Made in Sheffield’ banner. Below the banner a bottle of beer and numerous stainless steel tools and cutlery items jostle for position providing a timely glimpse into two trades the city and its municipality are hugely proud of – beer and steel. Peter & Tim from The Sheffield Brewery Co. One mile north of the town hall lays Neepsend, an industrial part of the steel city since the 1800s and on Burton Road running through the suburb stands an imposing building called the Albyn Works . The building dates back to the mid-1800s and was built by Joseph Pickering, the son of a Sheffield silversmith. Pickerings produced numerous polishing pastes used in a variety of crafts including polish for the burgeoning cutlery trade. It seems fitting that The Sheffield Brewery Company have made their home in this historic building. Pete

Your Local: Interval Cafe Bar

Image
The Reader: Sheffield University Real Ale & Cider Society ( @RealAleSoc ): Nathan Rodgers (President), Tom Roseveare (Inclusion Officer) & Ben Wright (Social Secretary). Why is this ‘Your Local’? “Nice balance between a cafe and bar atmosphere with good beer and food. It’s not like any other university bar I’ve visited, having loads of hand pulls of beer and a fridge full of craft beer”. Favourite tipple: Brearley , a collaborative brew from Sheffield University Real Ale Society and Thornbridge Brewery. A New World hoppy amber ale at 4 per cent. Named after the stainless steel originator Harry Brearley and using New World hops like Pacific Jade and Gem in addition to some dry hopping techniques. The Local : Having recently won Sheffield Camra Club of the year has marked this university hang out as a tangible beer destination amongst the city centre bars. With a landscaped terrace it’s one of the finest beer gardens to spend a sunny afternoon within th

Jim C's Comic & Beer Inspired Print Launch

Image
Kelham Island Brewery need little introduction as their beer does the talking for them. I’d take a punt that most Sheffield residents have had a sup of Pale Rider in their time. Having been brewing for over twenty years they are often cited, with good reason, as a real driving force in Sheffield’s beer scene. I know comic book inspired artist Jim Connolly has definitely supped a few pints of Pale Rider in his time and no doubt this is how the successful collaboration between the two started – over a pint of ale.  With the launch of his new print paying homage to Pale Rider I caught up with Jim to talk about comics and beer. Artist Jim C launches a new print paying homage to  Kelham Island Brewery's  flagship beer Pale Rider Video trailer by Northshot here . Q: Let's talk comics first as it's a major inspiration on your art. Can you share with us some of your key inspirations? Yeah sure. My favourite comic book artist has to be Brian

Oakham Ales & Hogan's Cider Create Oaple

Image
We all like a bit of Oakham Citra....come on, who can resist? So when I was sent this press release on Oakham collaborating with Hogan's on a cider it made me take a second glance. Oakham's production director John Bryan was inspired after visiting Stocks Farm and learning that the Bramley orchard was under threat. He decided to contact Hogan's to see if they could help him and the Bramley apple orchard. Oaple medium dry cider was the outcome of the partnership a 5.8 per. Made from English cider apples with a hint of freshly pressed Bramleys, Oakham is producing 10,000 litres of Oaple which will be available from May 2013. John Bryan says “ Oaple is a medium dry cider starting with a slightly tart apple flavour leading to a full bodied and deliciously fruity taste ”. Adrian Posnett, Oakham Ales Managing Director says: “ Oaple is a completely new product for us and the timing is right. Not only does it taste great, but knowing that we have helped support an En
