Your Local: The Red Deer

The Reader: Clare Tollick, food blogger @FeastAndGlory

Why is this ‘Your Local’? “Very local for me as I live just around the corner. There is always friendly, welcoming staff behind the bar. They cook good Sunday dinners with locally sourced meat from butchers John Crawshaw, plus it’s enormous!”

Favourite tipple: Stouts and porters are Clare’s favs and with the Red Deer having a rotating beer choice means there is always something new to try on each visit. On a recent visit Clare savoured Nook Brewery’s Cherry Stout 5.2 per cent (brewed in Holmfirth).

The Local: In August 2010 New Zealander Jacob Nickles took over the lease of the Red Deer from Punch giving it a new direction and increasing the selection of quality real ales available to nine handpulls. Two Yorkshire beers are a constant mainstay in addition to well-loved nationals and interesting guests plus one, as Camra says, ‘real’ cider. As cellar manager Jacob can ensure the quality of the cask offering and is proudly Cask Marque accredited. If you’re new to ale or like to sample many different styles the Deer offers a ‘tasting paddle’ which consists of three thirds of beer for the cost of a pint. With having offered in excess of 300 ales over the past two and half years, it’s no wonder the tasting paddles have been a popular option with customers. Keep up to date on all new beers to the bar via their ‘Beer’ link on the website and for news about their new Ale Society. If you fancy a meet the brewer night or a social visit to an up and coming brewery then join up now!
