Your Local: The Hop Box

The Reader: Ben Smith, aka The Hop Box

Why is this ‘Your Local’?  “The Hop Box celebrates interesting beers from the UK and worldwide brewing scene. There’s a real renaissance going on and I wanted to ensure that beer offering is showcased at outdoor events and with integrity.”

Favourite tipple:  American and UK pale ales such as Redwillow’s Wreckless 4.8%, The Kernel Table Beer 3.2% and Buxton Brewery’s Moor Top 3.6%.

The Local: Bringing a twist on the usual shenanigans we thought going with the philosophy of bringing Your Local to you would chime the right bells. Without realising that attempting to hunt down a mobile bar in the height of summer was a challenge unto itself!

Ben Smith started The Hop Box mobile bar specialising in independent micro-brewed beer in 2011. A fortuitous set of circumstances found him running an event for the social research charity he worked for after their agreed provider dropped out at short notice.  Invigorated by the successful beer event and ignited by the burgeoning indie brewers in London, Ben decided to make the jump to running his own business. Mining inspiration from the street food scene Ben settled on modifying a horse box into an all singing and dancing quirky characterful bar. With a clear focus on sourcing independent micro-breweries to serve at The Hop Box you’ll find local Yorkshire brews next to beers from further afield. Relocating to Sheffield last year with his family, Ben has found that the thriving beer scene in the city has embraced his Hop Box philosophy.

News on the street (or in a field in The Hop Box’s case) is a collaboration with Sheffield coffee institution Tamper at their newly launched second venue, the Grade II listed Sellers Wheel on Arundel Street. Adding yet another business to an already award winning area, Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter could be a food and drink oasis in the making.

Oooh! Looks good. I may have to hunt this place down. It would be a great addition to local community events that plod on with a bar of Carling and smoothflow Tetleys.
