Beer X Marks Sheffield as Hotspot

Image
“ Arguably one of Britain’s greatest brewing cities ,” Renowned beer writer and local lad Pete Brown, citing Sheffield as a brewing city to watch out for. The Society of Independent Brewer’s ( SIBA ) annual conference welcomed beer producers, suppliers and consumers to Sheffield for a three day event culminating with an immense BeerX festival back in March. The occasion combined numerous events from the organisation to provide one platform wholly celebrating the success and importance of the brewing industry in Britain. Having gained 100 new SIBA members within the last year, the society represents a good chunk of the industry with 652 members. Industry speakers at the conference included head brewer Garrett Oliver from Brooklyn Brewery , Shadow Minister for Small Business Toby Perkins MP, Community Pubs Minister Brandon Lewis and chef/TV presenter Simon Rimmer, providing a diverse mix of voices over the three day event. With the announcement a couple of weeks later fr...

Record Store Day...it's bigger than Christmas...Events listing

Image
LP Store, Sheffield 2013 Events Record Store Web Audio Gold - London Audio Gold are having a free turntable surgery in the shop on RSD, with their best man on hand to offer help and advice and carry out minor surgery there and then for free (parts will be charged of course). Larger/longer issues we will book jobs in for later. They’ll also be full of all sorts of vinyl accessories for the day, again to focus on the fact that vinyl is at its brilliant best when ones turntable has had a little love. The record store itself will be plumped out with several collections we've been holding back and some guest stalls from collectors/dealers and of course RSD releases. We always keep bins of good records that we sell at £1 a piece in aid of Gilles Petersons Steve Reid Foundation, which is a tributary of the Musicians Benevolent Fund. We'll be plumping them out too, so there'll be bundles of bargains to be had. Live bands performing in store all day. Avalanche –...

Cooking with Craft Union

Image
“Nothing quenches the thirst like a Wheat Beer, or sharpens the appetite like an India Pale Ale. Nothing goes as well with seafood as a Dry Porter or Stout, or accompanies chocolate like an Imperial Stout. Nothing soothes like a Barley Wine.” Legendary beer writer, Michael Jackson’s extract from ‘The Beer Hunter’ is a simple introduction to the world of food and beer pairing and although this dining concept is new to many, it has been gaining some ground over the last few years. Indeed, brew master of the widely acclaimed Brooklyn Brewery, Garrett Oliver , was another early champion with his seminal publication ‘The Brewmaster’s Table’ some ten years ago. Back here in the UK the idea of pairing food with something other than wine has been bubbling away for some time. St Austell Brewery in Cornwall offers visitors a tour which finishes in its restaurant where Cornish hog’s puddings are partnered with a glass of Proper Job, an authentic IPA made with Cornish spring wa...

Your Local: The Red Deer

Image
The Reader: Clare Tollick, food blogger @FeastAndGlory Why is this ‘Your Local’? “Very local for me as I live just around the corner. There is always friendly, welcoming staff behind the bar. They cook good Sunday dinners with locally sourced meat from butchers John Crawshaw , plus it’s enormous!” Favourite tipple: Stouts and porters are Clare’s favs and with the Red Deer having a rotating beer choice means there is always something new to try on each visit. On a recent visit Clare savoured Nook Brewery’s Cherry Stout 5.2 per cent (brewed in Holmfirth). The Local: In August 2010 New Zealander Jacob Nickles took over the lease of the Red Deer from Punch giving it a new direction and increasing the selection of quality real ales available to nine handpulls. Two Yorkshire beers are a constant mainstay in addition to well-loved nationals and interesting guests plus one, as Camra says, ‘real’ cider. As cellar manager Jacob can ensure the quality of the cask offering and is prou...

Brewing On The Edge

Image
Micro brewing may be a term you’re familiar with – beer brewed on a small scale often on a brewery plant which allows for dynamic changes allowing crafting of each intricate element of the brew. Really there’s no specific definition of this in the UK. The only correlation to size in the UK is to do with beer tax. The small brewers’ progressive beer duty relief was introduced in 2002 with concessions of 50% on beer duty if breweries produced fewer than 50,000 hectolitres, with a tapering reduction in tax for production up to 300,000 hectolitres of beer. When you look to America their Brewers Association define a micro or craft brewery with a production size of less than 700,000 hectoliters a year. Moreover no more than 24% can be owned by another alcoholic beverage company that is not itself a craft brewery. So ‘micro’ comes in many different sizes. Imagine the next step down - nano or pico brewing . Tiny beer operations, brewing mini batches of beer and distributed to a limit...

Miami Weisse at The Tapped Brew Co

Image
What do you get when you cross American hops with a wheat beer? Miami Weisse of course, a 5.5 per cent American hopped wheat beer. Eighteen months in the making but really fifteen years coming The Sheffield Tap brew house is finally here and producing not only wheat beer but India pale ale, stout and quality session ale to boot. All from the minds of The Tapped Brew Co the beer-volutionary next steps from The Sheffield Tap co-founders Jon Holdsworth and Jamie Hawksworth. Sheffield’s own newest copper shining brewpub in what was once the Edwardian dining room at Sheffield train station. The only working brewery in a railway station in the country. Jon and Jamie were born just down the road from each other, one Dronfield, one Chesterfield, both studied structural engineering in Leeds only years apart; it wasn’t until 1998 their paths finally crossed while working at the same design consultancy. Some would say coincidence finally came a knocking, bringing...

Your Local: The Riverside

Image
The Reader: Sarah Hudson, Design Technology Teacher (Secondary School), Rotherham. Why is this ‘Your Local’?: “The artwork is a real draw to the venue for me and adds to the atmosphere and vibe of the place. You always find a nice mix of people which means you’re guaranteed a good time on every visit.” Favourite tipple: Sarah enjoys cider of all varieties and most importantly a choice. They often hold cider festivals throughout the year, though mainly in the summer with up to 35 styles of perries and ciders. British Beer Styles

Image
Thanks for use of poster to: www.popchartlab.com www.twitter.com/popchartlab British beer is incredibly diverse; no wonder as there’s now over 1,000 breweries in the UK. From biscuity and citrus golden ales to peppery hop characterful bitters and dark roasted malt liquorice stouts. Trying to navigate the wide choice available, to find what floats your taste buds can be tough (and enjoyable!). It’s a bit like walking into a record store looking for a new album to purchase, in that you don’t know what you’re looking for, but you know which genre you like to start digging through the racks at the right point. In this way beer styles are a helpful grouping putting similar beers together in terms of all of these elements - yeast type, fermentation, ingredients and brewing techniques. Camra list nine British beer categories, these are: Mild, Bitter, Golden Ales, Pale Ales and IPAs, Porter and Stouts, Barley Wine, Old Ale, Scottish Beers and Light Bitters. To make it e...
